KAPIT has 100 years of history and is the largest district in Sarawak. It has rich natural resources and adequate basic infra-structure. Hence it is ideal for investment

Based on record, Hokkien Chinese came to Kapit in 1880 to open up virgin forest in Kapit followed byKa Chinese in 1906 and later Foochow Chinese in 1919. They came to Kapit initially to try their luck and to find fortune there. Life then was simple. They grew rubber trees and pepper and traded treated rubber sheet, rotan, and forest tree seeds.

They treated education of their future generation as priority. Hence in 1929, they built the only Chinese primary school known as FuNam Primary School. In 1935, They set up the "Tai San Tin" association to take care of the welfare of chinese there.

In 1941, during Japanese Invasion, Kapit only had two rows of 37 shophouses. But during landing of allied force the 37 units of shophouses were flattened bybombs. Chinese had to built temporary atap houses (houses made of atap leaves) to continue doing business.

In 1950 Kapit old market 42 units of shophouses were built. Now Kapit has about 200 units of shophouses (total in new and old markets).

On 2nd April 1973 Kapit, Belaga and Song formed the seven division of Sarawak. Civic Centre was built in 1972 which houses the indoor badminton court. On the side of Civic Centre, there was an open air sepak takraw court.

In 1973, A new  post office was built to provide postal services as well as to convenience payment of water bills, telephone bills as well as deposit and remittance.

On 31st August 1977, Government Building near to Lily Pond was officially open for business.

In 1978 Government Hall was built but unfortunately it was burned down in 1990.

In 1980 a government building was built  in new bazzar.

Hawkers Centre was built in 1984 with 60 triangle shape roof top design. In 1990 it was renovated into Keyanlang double storey hawkers centre with 30 stores selling different food of various races.

Kapit's old hospital was built in 1960. It was a church but because of financial difficulty hence it was taken over bythe authority and converted into a hospital in 1974. A new 5-storey hospital was built in June 1996.

Government intended to build a satellite town known as Belitik, 2 KM from town occupying 21 Hectacres but the project was shelved until further notice. To link the proposed Belitik Satellite town, government has built the 5Million Ringgits worth of Sungai Kapit bridge.

A 10 Million Ringgit Integrated Sport Complex has been built. It comprises of 2000 seating capacity indoor stadium, an olympic size swimming pool and a 200 hundred bed male and female hostel (separated). It also has badminton court, basketball court, tennis court and etc. But it is not open for public yet.

Private housing developer is building 13 units of terrace houses and 4 rows of shophouses. The project is near completion (24/1/98). The demand on shophouses is high.

Transportation

You can go to Kapit byexpress boat. It will take only slightly more than 2 hours to go from Sibu to Kapit. Express boat leaves both from Sibu and Kapit every half hourly. Some boat have first class and economy class seating. Economy costs RM15 per person and first class costs RM20 per person. One boat has VIP class which costs RM25 per person. Last boat depart both Sibu and kapit at 2:30 p.m. The most comfortable boat is HUSQVARNA Express.

Air service is only once a week (on Sunday) as less people use air transport.
