Miri
LOCATIONLying off the coast of Southeast Asia, Borneo is the largest island of the great Malay archipelago that stretches eastward from Southeast Asia to the western tip of New Guinea. Covered bydense tropical rainforest, this enormous island, roughly twice the size of the British Isles, is divided between the modern nations of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the oil-rich sultanate of Brunei. Europeans first encountered this land in 1521, when members of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition made a brief stop at Brunei, but the island remained largely unexplored byEuropeans until the latter half of the nineteenth century. .
Sarawak shares Borneo with the Malaysian State of Sabah, the
Sultanate of Negara Brunei Darussalam and the Indonesian province of Kalimantan.
Place Of Interest
Miri is the northern tourism gateway to Sarawak and the ideal jumping-off point for three of Sarawak’s world-famous national parks- Niah Cave, Mulu Cave and Lambir Hills. Other interesting destinations such as the Bario Highlands and upper Baram River are also accessible from Miri.A rapidly expanding business and commercial centre and home of Sarawak’s oil industry, Miri is located in north-eastern Sarawak close to the Brunei border. It enjoys excellent air and road links as well as modern airport and seaport facilities. Public transport is also modern and efficient. The town is fast becoming and important tourism destination in its own right and work is underway to transform it into an ultramodern resort city, which will include a new waterfront and world-class marina.
Miri has an excellent range of hotels in all price categories, and probably the best selection of food and entertainment outlets in Sarawak. There are also bustling native markets, scenic parks and beaches, shopping arcades and the best sports and recreational facilities. Its greatest asset is perhaps its people a myriad of races and cultures forming the most cosmopolitan, dynamic and friendliest of Sarawak’s communities.
All these combined make
for one vibrant, progressive town that is the perfect place to visit, relax and
absorb all that is great about Sarawak!
Gunung Mulu National Park is one of Nature’s most spectacular achievements and the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Sarawak’s expanding network of national parks. It is also the largest national park, covering 544 sq. km of primary rainforest, which is criss-crossed byfast flowing rivers and clear jungle streams. Mulu is dominated bythree mountains - Gunung Mulu (2,376 m), Gunung Api (1,750 m) and Gunung Benarat (1,585 m). Yet many of Mulu’s greatest attractions lie deep below the surface. Hidden underneath the forested slopes of these mountains is one of the largest limestone cave systems in the world.
This system, a breath-taking natural wonder, contains a number of record breaking caves. With the world’s largest cave passage (Deer Cave), the world’s largest natural chamber (Sarawak Chamber), the longest cave in Southeast Asia (Clearwater Cave), it is not surprising that Mulu is now world-famous. Over 200 km of cave passages have been surveyed but this is thought to represent just 30-40% of the actual total.
Although Mulu is synonymous with caves, the ‘Mulu experience’ is not limited to underground attractions; above ground there is plenty to see and do. The park is covered in rich primary rainforest and offers a whole range of nature-based activities. There are some excellent jungle treks and mountain hikes, including the challenging trek to view the Pinnacles - 45 metre high, razor sharp limestone spikes that sit majestically on the slopes of Gunung Api.
With it’s rich bio-diversity, and world-famous caves, Mulu offers the adventurous traveller an exhilarating cave and rainforest experience, possibly unmatched anywhere else on Earth.

Niah National Park is situated about 109 km from Miri and 131km from Bintulu. Niah National Park encompasses 3,140 hectares of forest and limestone. The centre of the park is dominated bythe 394m high summit of Gunung Subis.
Within the Park ( and the massif) are the Niah Caves. The whole cave system which includes the Great Cave, the Painted Cave and the Traders’ Cave was declared a National Historic Monument in 1958 as an archaeological heritage and is now under the management of the Sarawak Museum and the Sarawak Forest Department

Lambir National Park is located along the Miri-Bintulu road, some 24 km south of Miri town ( Oil Town), in Miri Division, Sarawak and was gazette on 26 June 1975. It covers an area of 6,952 hectares which consist of the central portion of the Lambir Hills, a rugged east-west sandstone escarpment with a maximum height of 465 metres. Moreover, the park has high potential value for recreational, educational and research purposes.
Due to the approximate of the park from Miri, day trips or half day trips to the Park are possible, but accommodation facilities for overnight visitors are available too. The accommodation ranges from camping to standard rest house
